The annual campus-wide Christmas formal is quickly approaching. We have less than two weeks to go and everyone is buying their ticket now. You don't want to miss this exciting event. With live music, great giveaways and a new location, it promises to be one of the best events of the year. Tickets are on sale every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the Beaman at 10am. Tickets are $12 for an individual or $20 for a couple. The first 75 people to buy a ticket will receive a free t-shirt. We look forward to seeing you there!

Constitutional Amendment Voting

The Constitutional amendment to no longer require prerequisite courses for the positions of Treasure and Parliamentarian has passed.

Last week, students voted 132 to 53 in favor of the amendment. Thank you to everyone who participated in the referendum.

Grant Petitions are due October 20, 2008 at 10:00am outside the SGA office. Petitions turned into Student Affairs will not be considered. There is an envelope attached to the window in which you can turn in your completed petitions. Blank petitions can also be picked up outside the SGA office on the window, or you can download a petition from the website. (I have attached the most recent GP form to this post).

Constitutional Amendment Voting on Blackboard

The Student Government Association will having an online voting, via blackboard, concerning an amendment to take out course requirements for the positions of Secretary and Parliamentarian. A copy of the amendment can be found under the documents link at the top left hand corner of this web page.

Voting will run from 10:00 am October 13th through 2:00 pm October 15th.
As always, we encourage every student to be a part of Student Government activities and voting.

Deadline Extended: SGA Congress Petitions

The deadline for turning in SGA Congress petitions has now been extended to Monday September 15th at 10:00 a.m. Also, if you are planning on running for SGA Congress, you must attend one of the mandatory elections meetings. The two dates to choose from are Monday September 15th at 10:00 a.m. or Tuesday September 16th at 5:30 p.m. Both meetings will be located in Massey 100. It is required for all Congress candidates to attend.

Executive Leadership Program Opportunities

Ten Belmont freshmen are selected to participate in a year-long program in which they move through a series of various types of experiences as a cohesive unit learning about teamwork, leadership, communication, community service, organization, and self- purpose. Topics to be included in the program: team building, communication skills, event planning, time management, self motivation, personal purpose and mission.Students will have the opportunity to network with campus administrators, current student leaders, and community professionals. Students will be required to complete a series of tasks, including being given a budget and the necessary resources to create, plan and implement a campus-wide event/program for the Belmont community.

Applications are now available outside of the SGA Office in the Beaman Student Life Center and are due by noon on September 10th.

Welcome Back!

On behalf of the Student Government Association, I would like to welcome everyone back to Belmont. This upcoming year is going to prove to be truly monumental one here at Belmont and I can't wait to see what will unfold. SGA Cabinet has already been hard at work over the summer preparing for the upcoming year. We have a large number of events, programs, and initiatives planned for the coming year.

If you are interested in getting involved on campus, we would love for you to come and check out Congress and ELP (Executive Leadership Program). To find out more information about either of these opportunities please check us out at the Fresh Fest (for freshmen only) on Tuesday August 26th 4-7 p.m. on the Grassy Knoll, or at the Student Activities Fair on Friday August 29th 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. on the Quad.

A Call to Action - Voter Registration Concert

This Saturday from 2-4 PM, Student Government Association is sponsoring a concert to encourage students to register to vote. The concert will feature Stephanie Lambring, Brett McLaughlin, Mary Lawren Maples, and Josh Wright. A booth will be set up for students to register to vote, but even you are already registered, come and enjoy some of Belmont's top artists!

The concert will be in the amphitheater by the Bell Tower.

Culture and Arts Convocation will be given.

2008 Bruin Den Day

On April 12th (this Saturday), Student Government Association will be hosting its annual 'Bruin Den Day' service event. This year, Belmont SGA is partnering with Hands on Nashville to create opportunities to plug in students with local community organizations. Breakfast, lunch, and transportation will all be provided. This is an excellent opportunity to serve your community as well as have a great time!

4 credit hours of community service convo will be given!

Free t-shirts to all participants as well!

Cabinet Reorganization Constitutional Amendment

Below is the full text of a proposed amendment to the SGA Constitution. It will be up for a campus-wide vote on April 7-8 on Blackboard:

BELMONT UNIVERSITY
STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION

AN ACT PROPOSING AN AMENDMENT TO THE STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION CONSTITUTION THAT REORGANIZES THE COMPOSITION OF THE EXECUTIVE CABINET

WHEREAS, The Director of Campus Communications is currently responsible for planning Homecoming events, Battle of the Boulevard events, and other campus-wide events; AND,

WHEREAS, The Director of campus Communications is also responsible for serving as the liaison between the Student Government Association of Belmont University and both the university and community; AND,

WHEREAS, This position currently goes well beyond the scope of the duties presently listed in the Constitution; AND,

WHEREAS, There is a need for a Campus Events Coordinator on Executive Cabinet; AND,

WHEREAS, It is unnecessary for the position of Chaplain to serve on the Executive Cabinet, NOW THEREFORE,

BE IT ENACTED BY THE STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION OF BELMONT UNIVERSITY THAT:

Section 1: An amendment to Article II Section IV § A of the Constitution shall be proposed to remove the office of “Chaplain,” and establish the office of “Campus Events Coordinator.”

Section 2: An amendment to Article II Section IV § C of the Constitution shall be proposed to remove §§ 5, “Chaplain.”

Section 3: An amendment to Article II Section IV § C §§ 1 of the Constitution, “Director of Campus Communications,” shall be proposed so that it is re-written as follows:

Director of Campus Communications
Shall be the liaison between the Student Government Association and both the university and community.
Shall serve as the Elections Commissioner.
Shall attain and disseminate public interests.

Section 4: An amendment to Article II Section IV § C shall be proposed to include a new subsection 5 as follows:

Campus Events Coordinator
Shall be responsible for planning and implementing campus events, such as Homecoming, Battle of the Boulevard, Mistletoe Ball, etc., in cooperation with the Campus Events Committee and the Office of Student Affairs.

Section 5: An amendment to Article III Section II § B §§s 7 and 8 shall be proposed to change them as follows:

Chaplain
Must be a student in good standing at Belmont University
Any further requirements students must meet in order to remain voting members of congress are set forth in the By-Laws to this constitution.

Section 6: An amendment to Article III Section II § C shall be proposed to add §§ 3 as follows:

Chaplain
Shall, at the first meeting of each new Congressional term, be appointed by the President from all the filled seats of the Student Congress and confirmed by majority vote of the Congress.

Section 7: An amendment to Article III Section II § D §§ 2 clauses f. and g. shall be proposed to change them as follows:

The Chaplain shall provide a devotional for every meeting of the Student Government Association Congress and spiritual leadership to the Student Government Association.
All representative duties are considered primary duties; every representative of every type shall make himself or herself available to any student regarding SGA business or student life improvement should the need arise.

Section 8: These amendments shall cumulatively be proposed as “Amendment III” to the Student Government Association Constitution and presented to the Student Body of Belmont University for ratification in a special election.

Belmont Vision Online - New Parking Policy

Apartment/Thrailkill Residents: New Evening Parking Policy

If you currently live in Bruin Hills, Hillside, Thrailkill, or Belmont Commons, we are pleased to give you this announcement.

Resulting from a dedicated effort by SGA, starting this semester, you are now allowed to park on the main section of campus (areas designated for commuter students and faculty) in the evenings starting at 8 pm, and lasting until 7 am. This policy is enforced 7 days a week.

This new policy has multiple benefits to students (this list is not exhaustive!):

Safety during evening hours by reducing foot traffic
Musicians transporting heavy equipment to practice rooms and recording studios
Added convenience towards utilizing the Library and Beaman in the evenings
Traveling to campus during inclement weather
Increased convenience for other evening activities

IMPORTANT: This policy change is still in a pilot stage. This means that at the end of this semester (Spring '08) administration will review to see if the benefits outweigh any costs caused by this policy. Please do not abuse this policy! Make sure you do not arrive before 8 pm, and please move your car before the morning. We would hate to have students who would utilize this legitimately to be penalized by those who would break the rules. Besides, you will get ticketed.

Finally, please spread the word. We want students to be able to make use of this policy if needed. Tell anyone you know living in these residential locations. Also, if you could let them know that this is resulting from an SGA proposal, and that their Student Government is dedicated to working for students' interests.

Mistletoe Ball

Tickets are now on sale for the annual Mistletoe Ball, hosted by The Student Government Association.

The event is on Friday November 30th 2007 8-11 PM in the Maddox Grand Attrium.

Ticket Prices: $12 for individual tickets and $20 per couple. Ticket sales began on November 12th in the Beaman at 10:00 AM, and will be on sale until the day of the event. Tickets will also be available throughout the day in the SGA office, and in the office of Student Affairs.

Are you a commuter student that is tired of getting to campus at your usual time, only to find out that entire floors of the parking garage have been blocked off and parking is a nightmare? If you drove to campus today (October 18^th), I am sure you know the feeling.

Welcome back from Fall Break! Here we are halfway through the semester. Time does fly...

Here is an update to see how your SGA has been hard at work:

Congress Retreat: On September 23^rd, we had our annual congress retreat in the Massey Boardroom. Its purpose is to educate new congress members on the workings of SGA, brainstorm ideas for change on campus, and to establish what our overall vision will be. Dr. Dan McAlexander, the University Provost, came as a guest speaker and spoke on many things including the vision for the University, as well as what Senior Leadership needs to see when presented with an idea for change.

President's Council: September 28^th was our first President's Council meeting of the year. We had much to go over. Here is a rundown of what all we covered:

Dr. Fisher came and spoke about the President's Spirit Award. If you are a student organization, you will want to know about this new tradition that is being started at Belmont. For information, read the ad in the Belmont Vision or click here.
Liz Kazeck spoke on the new changes in the M.O.B., including their new attendance competition. For information, go to the M.O.B.'s website: http://www.bruinmob.com/
Fatima Karwandyar spoke on the Susan G. Komen race. This is an excellent way for student organizations to fulfill their community service requirement. If you would like information, feel free to e-mail her at karwandyarf@pop.belmont.edu.

Congress Meetings - We have had two meetings with the full 2007-2008 Congress, and everyone is working hard for students. Committee chairs were elected on the 24^th, and are already working on issues such as refining the grant petitions process, parking, and Bruin Hills/Hillside gate issues. Stay tuned as more on these issues develop...
