Violinist Elisabeth Small is a teacher and a performer of the recital, concerto and chamber music repertoire. She has appeared as a soloist with many orchestras including the National and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestras, the Nashville Symphony Orchestra with the Nashville Ballet and the Nashville Chamber Orchestra. Highlights of recent performances include recitals with pianist Kris Elsberry in Magdeburg and Dresden, Germany and as a guest on the Faculty Artist Series at University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Werner Recital Hall. Previous recital engagements include appearances in New York, Boston, Western Canada and Washington D.C. at the National Gallery of Art. Ms. Small has been heard in broadcasts on public radio stations throughout the United States and as a recording artist she can be heard on the Premiere Records label with pianist Alan Mandel in the first recordings of the Loewe and Roentgen Sonatas. An avid chamber musician, she has performed at the Teton, Aspen, Caramoor and Banff festivals, the Lincoln Center Institute, at Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theater, the Embassy Series in Washington D.C., and the Symphony Space Chamber Music America 25th Anniversary Marathon in New York. Ms. Small serves as Artistic Director of Belmont Camerata Musicale, the faculty chamber ensemble at Belmont University known to Nashville audiences for its long standing series in the historic Belmont Mansion and for a decade of broadcasts on the WDCN-TV 8 series Recital Hall. Ms. Small has served as Associate Concertmaster of the Atlanta Symphony. She records commercially with the Nashville String Machine.
Elisabeth Small is a graduate of the Juilliard School where she studied violin with the renowned teacher Dorothy DeLay. In addition to her studies with DeLay, her mentors have included the legendary violinist, Nathan Milstein. She has taught many generations of violinists at Belmont University where she is coordinator of the String Department. Ms. Small has taught at the Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan, the Tennessee Governor’s School for the Arts, Tennessee Technological University, Tennessee State University and currently teaches at Belmont University’s popular String Crossings Camp.
Her students continue to perform across the globe, from Japan to Australia to Europe. They are members of professional orchestras and string quartets, hold teaching positions at institutions from elementary through university level, and have achieved distinction in the commercial music industry, backing up major Pop and Country stars on National television in recording and on tour. Her students can be heard performing Celtic, Christian, Rock and Jazz styles on various CD recordings, radio broadcasts, television appearances and music tours. Many of her past and present students have toured with, or are currently touring with, Reba McEntire, Tricia Yearwood, Martina McBride, Alan Jackson, Faith Hill, Brad Paisley, Patti Loveless, Bill Anderson and other current music artists.
