CEMB STUDENT STUDIO STAFF

 

Since the mid-1970s, Belmont students have gained valuable studio experience by working in the Belmont Studios, which include the R.E. Mulloy Studios on campus, RCA Studio B, Ocean Way Nashville and the new 34 Music Square East Building.  Working as Student Studio Staff helps Belmont graduates begin their studio career with experience in studio management, facilitating and assisting sessions, performing routine studio maintenance, and recording engineer experience. Students are hired by the Dean of the Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business upon the recommendation of the Studio Managers.

·         Student Staff Engineers are eligible to engineer digital and analog recording sessions with "authorized access" to the studio facilities (Level 1, Level 2, and Senior Staff Engineers).

CEMB STUDENT STUDIO PERSONNEL

There are five levels of studio staff employment:

 

1. General Office/Technical Worker (All Studios) 

·         Pay is set at $6.50/hr.

·         Available to any Federal Work Study (FWS) student.

·         Job related tasks include

o        office and administrative assistance to the studio managers

o        directed maintenance tasks such as basic studio cleaning and electronic repairs (based upon qualifications and experience).

·         Does not include monitoring recording sessions or student/class-related session or lab activities.

 

2. Junior Staff Engineer (RCA Studio B)

·         Available to students that have completed AET1380 and AET3090.

·         Job related tasks include monitoring recording sessions at RCA Studio B.

·         Does not include facilitating and monitoring class-related lab activities.

·         Pay is set between $6.50 - $6.65/hr.

·         Base hourly pay criteria will be as follows:

o        $6.50/hr = pass the RCA Studio B practical entrance evaluation.

o        $6.65/hr = eligible after one semester of employment; pass the RCA Studio B practical evaluation #2 comprising studio session policies, building operating procedures, and analog tape machine alignment.

·         Student is limited to two semesters of employment at this employment level. 

o        Student must complete AET3190 and pass a R.E. Mulloy Studios practical entrance evaluation to advance to the next level, Staff Engineer Level 1.

 

3. Staff Engineer Level 1 (R.E. Mulloy Studios)

·         Available to students that have completed AET1380, AET3090, and AET3190, and Junior Staff Engineers in their 3rd semester of employment who have completed AET3190.

·         Job related tasks include monitoring recording sessions at the R.E. Mulloy Studios and RCA Studio B; facilitating and monitoring class-related lab activities at RCA Studio B.

·         Does not include class-related lab activities at the R.E. Mulloy Studios.

·         Pay is set between $6.75 – $7.00/hr.

·         Base hourly pay criteria is based upon a satisfactory work record and the following:

o        $6.75/hr = pass the R.E. Mulloy Studios practical entrance evaluation.

·         Note:  If the applicant has not worked at RCA Studio B as a Junior Staff Engineer, then the applicant must also pass the RCA Studio B practical entrance evaluation.

o        $7.00/hr = completion of  AET2270 Studio Maintenance 1 or recommendation of the Studio Manager.

 

4. Staff Engineer Level 2 (R.E. Mulloy Studios)

·         Available to Level 1 Staff Engineers

·         Job related tasks include monitoring recording sessions at the R.E. Mulloy Studios and RCA Studio B; facilitating and monitoring class-related lab activities at R.E. Mulloy Studios and RCA Studio B.

·         Does not include class-related lab activities at Ocean Way studios.

·         Pay is set between $7.15 and $7.25/hr.

·         Base hourly pay criteria is based upon a satisfactory work record and the following:

o        $7.15/hr = pass the R.E. Mulloy Studios practical equipment evaluation #2 including studio session policies and session procedures.

o        $7.25/hr = completion of  AET3270 (Studio Maintenance 2) or recommendation of the Studio Manager.

 

5. Senior Staff Engineer (Ocean Way Nashville, R.E. Mulloy Student Studios)

·         Available to Level 2 Staff Engineers.

·         Job related tasks include monitoring student recording sessions and class-related lab activities at Ocean Way Nashville Studios and the R.E. Mulloy Studios.  Primary job assignment will be one semester at Ocean Way Nashville, other semesters at R.E. Mulloy Student Studios.

·         Pay is set at $7.50/hr.

o        employment is based upon a satisfactory work record

o        the recommendation of the Studio Managers

o        successful completion of practical entrance evaluation at Ocean Way Nashville Studios including knowledge of studio policies and session procedures.

 

 

CEMB STUDENT STUDIO STAFF APPLICATION PROCESS

 

General Office/Technical Worker (All Studios)

·         Contact the Studio Manager at the studio you are interested in for more information on available jobs and application information.

 

Junior Staff Engineer (RCA Studio B)

1.       Pick up an application from Billy Prince, R.E. Mulloy Studio Manager.

2.       Submit the completed application to Michael Janas, RCA Studio B Manager.  Include a letter to Dean Wesley Bulla, stating that you would like to be hired as a staff engineer.  Your letter should state the reasons you would like to work as a staff engineer, and how you believe it would help you and other students who are in the process of learning this art.  The letter will then be placed in your student file in the CEMB office.

3.       Interview with Michael Janas consideration to be placed staff at RCA Studio B.

4.       Complete RCA Studio B practical entrance evaluation.

 

Staff Engineer Level 1 (R.E. Mulloy Studios)

Promotion from Junior Staff Engineer:

·         During the second semester of employment at RCA Studio B, complete the R.E. Mulloy Studios practical entrance evaluation.  Contact Billy Prince for more information.

 

New Applicants:

1.       Pick up an application from Billy Prince, R.E. Mulloy Studio Manager.

2.       Submit the completed application to Billy Prince.  Include a letter to Dean Wesley Bulla, stating that you would like to be hired as a staff engineer.  Your letter should state the reasons you would like to work as a staff engineer, and how you believe it would help you and other students who are in the process of learning this art.  The letter will then be placed in your student file in the CEMB office.

3.       Interview with Michael Janas consideration to be placed staff at RCA Studio B.

4.       Complete the R.E. Mulloy Studios practical entrance evaluation and the RCA Studio B practical entrance evaluation.

 

STUDIO STAFF ENGINEERS: STANDARD JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

In addition to the above requirements, in order to remain eligible to serve as a staff engineer the student agrees to the following items.  Failure to comply with these items is cause for termination of employment.

1.       Maintain a minimum 2.8 GPA and be enrolled for a minimum of 12 semester hours of classes.  Student will be suspended from employment if GPA falls below 2.8.

2.       Enforce University, College and Studio policies and regulations.

3.       Work a minimum of eight (8) hours or two (2) regularly scheduled sessions per week. Maximum work hours per week is twenty (20).

4.       Thoroughly monitor all recording sessions during your shift for any possible problems.

5.       Supervise session changeovers to insure a smooth setup and teardown between sessions.

6.       Maintain studio logbooks, session invoices, and other related studio forms as required.

7.       Attend studio staff meetings.
