Robert E. Mulloy Student Studio Policies

I. PURPOSE

The Center for Music Business Recording Studios serve as production teaching laboratories for the Belmont University Music Business Program. The Center’s primary functions are: 1. To provide a professional environment conducive to learning based on "real world" audio recording and production techniques.

2. To create a professional recording environment and an opportunity for Music Business student audio engineers, producers, and musicians to learn recording and production techniques and to develop their music production and recording skills.

3. To provide student producers a chance to create musical projects.

4. To provide a professional setting for student musicians to perform on recording sessions.

5. To provide student songwriters a chance to record "demos."

** Note: The studios are not available for outside commercial ventures. **

II. GENERAL STUDIO OPERATIONS

A. STUDIO HOURS. The studios are available on Monday - Saturday at the standard session hours of 10:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m., and 10:00 p.m. (except when classes or labs are scheduled). Sunday sessions begin at 2:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. an 10:00 p.m.. Each "session" consists of a three (3) hour block of time as follows:

10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

10:00 p.m. - 1:00 a.m.

The engineer, producer and other session personnel may enter the studio one-half (1/2) hour before the scheduled session. That time may be used for studio set-up. The half (1/2) hour following the session is to be used for clean-up of the studio. It is the responsibility of the engineer, producer and client to see that the studio is in proper order when their session is finished.  
A 10:00 session may begin set-up at 9:30 and must begin clean-up* at 1:00.

A 2:00 session may begin set-up at 1:30 and must begin clean-up at 5:00.

A 6:00 session may begin set-up at 5:30 and must begin clean-up at 9:00.

* Mixing sessions may begin cleanup at :15 past hour.

B. STUDIO ACCESS. There are four levels of access to The Center for Music Business studios (1) GUEST ACCESS; (2) STUDENT ACCESS; (3) ACADEMIC ACCESS; and (4) AUTHORIZED ACCESS, they are defined as follows:

            1. GUEST ACCESS:

The Center for Music Business Recording Studios are open for student and faculty observation. Current Belmont University students and faculty members have access to the OBSERVATION AREAS of Studio A, Control Room A, Control Room B, and the Post/Mastering Suite. A current Belmont ID (students) is required for admittance. Access criteria: Current enrollment in Belmont University (student). Control Room C has very limited access due to the size of the room. 2. STUDENT ACCESS: In addition to access to the OBSERVATION AREAS of the recording facility, all current Music Business students enrolled in AET 1380 Survey Recording Technology have use privileges of the Center for Music Business CLASSROOM B-19, and  STUDIO D (B-13)  for purposed of fulfilling class lab and project requirements.

3. ACADEMIC ACCESS:
                            Students currently enrolled in studio recording/production classes have access to the OPERATIONS AREAS of Studio A, Control Room A, Control Room B, and the Computer                                             Editing/Mastering Suite and limited access to the Central Machine Room, studio storage room, and plate reverb room. Access criteria: Enrollment in AET 3090 (Audio EngineeringI)               AET 3190 (Audio Engineering II),  AET 3370 (Studio Production) ,  AET 4190(Recording Techniques), or  AET 4380 (The Recording Engineer).

4. AUTHORIZED ACCESS: Students who have (1) satisfactorily completed Audio Engineering I (AET 3090) and Audio Engineering II (AET 3190), (2) have demonstrated audio engineering skills, and (3) a respect for the proper care and maintenance of delicate audio equipment will have access to ALL AREAS of the Center for Music Business recording facility. Access criteria: Current enrollment in Belmont University and satisfactory completion of The Approved Engineer Process.

C. EQUIPMENT USE.
                                        Equipment is for use in the recording studios only, and may not be "borrowed" for personal use.

D. STUDENT BEHAVIOR.
                                        As in any other university classroom, proper language and proper dress is required. Food and drinks must
                                        remain  in  the lounge/snack room. NO FOOD OR DRINKS ARE ALLOWED IN THE LOBBY, CLASSROOMS,
                                        WRITER ROOMS OR STUDIO AREAS. Alcoholic beverages and drugs are not allowed and will not be tolerated.
                                        Persons under the "influence" of alcoholic beverages and/or drugs will be denied entrance to the studio facilities
                                        and will be asked to leave University grounds and may be denied further use of the studio facility. Clients who use
                                        the studio are also responsible for those persons engaged by them for their sessions. This means that it is the
                                        client’s responsibility to see that his/her session players, guests, etc. understand and adhere to the studio policies.

**THOSE WHO VIOLATE STUDIO POLICY OR ABUSE EQUIPMENT AND/OR THE FACILITIES WILL LOSE STUDIO PRIVILEGES**

E. RECORDING SUPPLIES.
                                       Master recording tape and supplies can be purchased in the University Bookstore during regular business hours.  If you do not find the supplies you are looking for there,
                                       ask the studio manager about other scources.

III. BOOKING OF RECORDING SESSIONS

A. ELIGIBILITY FOR BOOKING.

1. Any full-time CEMB student who is a sophomore, junior, or senior and who has successfully completed AET 1380  (Survey of Recording Technology) may book the studio facilities as a "CLIENT."

2. Session request forms must be filled out COMPLETELY AND CORRECTLY. The client must sign the session request form and give his/her ID and campus box number. FORMS NOT SIGNED ARE VOID AND WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED FOR SESSIONS.

3. Sessions may be requested up to two weeks in advance for personal use, demos, etc. Class projects can and should schedule their sessions as far as possible in advance.

4. Sessions cannot be booked by a student for any other student.
 

B. SESSION PERSONNEL.
                                        Every recording session must have a PRODUCER, ENGINEER, ASSISTANT ENGINEER, and when necessary, a
                                        SESSION LEADER.  
PRODUCER. Any full-time CEMB student who is a sophomore, junior, or senior and who has completed AET 1380 (Survey of Recording Technology) may work in the studio facilities as a "producer."

A studio "client" may act as the session "producer." A studio "client" may also act as session "engineer." However, it is highly recommended that the engineer not act as engineer AND producer. Also, a studio "client" and/or "producer" may NOT serve as the "assistant" engineer.

ASSISTANT ENGINEER. Students who have completed or are currently enrolled in AET 3090 (Audio Engineering I) are eligible for listing as "assistant engineers."
Privileges include: Eligibility to assist on any recording session with "academic access" to the studio facility.

ANALOG ENGINEER.Students who have successfully completed AET 3090 (Audio Engineering I) are eligible for listing as "analog engineers."
Privileges include: Eligibility to assist on any recording session and to engineer analog recording sessions with "academic access" to the studio facility.

DIGITAL/ANALOG ENGINEER. Students who have successfully completed AET 3090 (Audio Engineering I) & AET 3190 ( Audio Engineering II) are eligible for listing as "digital/analog engineers."
Privileges include: Eligibility to assist on any recording session and to engineer digital and/or analog recording sessions with "academic access" to the studio facility.

C. STUDENT "CLIENT" RESPONSIBILITIES.(The client is the person applying for studio time.) 1. Client is responsible for the actions of all musicians, engineers or others involved as guests of the session. The client is also responsible for the behavior of all non-Belmont University guests in attendance.

2. Client must work out in advance ALL session personnel, (i.e. engineers, musicians, etc.) before submitting the session request application, i.e. all engineers and assistants must sign (or initial) the application before submitting the form for approval.

3. Client must sign all required forms at the end of the session.

4. Client must be present and remain at the session at all times.

5. Client assumes the responsibility of contacting the studio manager (Mr. Billy Prince: 460-5553) if it is necessary to cancel his or her session. Avoid last minute cancellations. If a session must be cancelled, notify the studio manager as soon as you know, so that the time can be made available for someone else. You cannot give your time to someone else. That must be approved by the studio manager.

6. Client should come to the session prepared.
 

D. SESSION SCHEDULING
                                        The schedule is posted two weeks in advance on the campus website.  (http://Campus.belmont.edu/mb/studio/schedule/) After you check the schedule, you may apply for the date                                                 and time you desire by filling out the blue application form completly and dropping it off in the plastic box attached to the outside of the studio managers's office door.  Your                                                                 application will be screened and approved according to the priority schedule listed below.  Sessions may NOT be exchanged between students without prior permission of the                                                         studio manager.  Permission for session swaps will be given only if arrangements are made in advance so that the schedule may be changed accordingly.                                                                     E. PRIORITY USED IN DETERMINING SESSION SCHEDULE. 1. Class projects.

2. Approval sessions.

3. "Re-book" sessions (as defined C5 above).

4. Senior, junior and sophomore Music Business students (respectively) and certain Commercial Music projects.


**No money may be offered or paid to any staff member, musician, engineer or producer without express permission of either the Studio Manager or the Dean of The Mike Curb Music Business Program.**

 
NOTE: A staff engineer will be assigned to work each session and will be responsible for making sure that all policies are enforced. Staff personnel have the authority to stop and close any session immediately if rules and/or policies are abused by ANYONE involved in the session.
IV. STUDIO PERSONNEL & RESPONSIBILITIES

A. THE STAFF

STUDIO MANAGER. The Center for Music Business Recording Studios are the direct responsibility of The Mike Curb College Of Entertainment And Music Business. The Dean of The Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business maintains executive management responsibilities of the studio facility. The studio manager, Mr. Billy Prince, is responsible for studio bookings and daily operations.

STUDIO STAFF. Student engineers are hired by the Dean of College of Entertainment and Music Business upon recommendation of the Studio Manager to serve as staff engineers and/or staff maintenance engineers.

B. STAFF SECURITY PROCEDURES. 1. Perimeter doors in Studio A will remain closed when in use and locked when not in use.

2. "Authorized" entrance/exits at Central Machine Room and hallways will remain closed and locked.

3. "Authorized" entrance doors to Central Machine Room from Control Room A and Control Room B will remain closed.

4. Studio Storage Room doors will remain closed and locked at all times. It is accessed by studio staff and project engineers and assistant engineers only

**Eligible students must "check-in" with a valid ID upon entering the studio complex for session participation or observation.**

6. All perimeter doors in Studio A, Control Room A, and Control Room B will remain locked after 6:30 pm for security purposes. V. STUDENT STUDIO PERSONNEL - Click the link below for information and procedures of the approval process
    STUDIO STAFF ENGINEERS. B. MANDATORY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE
1. Supervise thoroughly all sessions assigned as a staff member.

2. Enforce studio/university policies and regulations. Report infractions through the proper channels.

3. See that the studios are ready for the next session. This includes supervising the set-up and break-down process.

4. Complete all forms which require signatures.

5. Be totally committed as a Music Business major.

6.  Attend weekly scheduled staff meetings.

Be aware of the security system which provides 24 hour recorded surveillance of the studios.  Limited admission into the studio is allowed through a Belmont ID card. Studio staff can also allow other participants to enter.The cardkey accesss door must remain closed at all times, and not be propped open and left unattended. Also, the elevator does not come down to the studio area after 10pm weeknights, or at any time during weekends.

PLEASE NOTE: Automobiles, trucks, etc. may not be driven up the sidewalk for any purpose. Also, the outside doors must not be propped open for permanent access due to an alarm system. See your staff member for help with this matter. Unloading must be done from the street with temporary parking being allowed for the unloading process. While unloading be sure to engage your flasher lights. After unloading, ALL cars must be moved to proper designated parking spaces.

    MICROPHONE USE POLICY
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  1.  Microphones to be used for sessions are checked out from the Staff Engineer by the Session Engineer only. The
                                Session Engineer should be the only person handling the mics for any given session, and is responsible for them.

                              2. AET 3090 Audio Engineering I students are restricted to the use of Dynamic Mics. This restriction is lifted once a student is enrolled in AET 3190 Audio Engineering II.

                              3. The Neumann M147 Tube Condenser Mics, and the Lawson Gold Tube Mic may be used by student engineers
                              enrolled in 400 Level courses.

                              4.  The Vintage Tube Mics are reserved for Faculty, Staff, and Senior Level Engineers only.

  1. STUDIO SESSION INVOICES
The studio session invoices provide student clients, engineers, assistant engineers, producers, musicians, and the studio manager with documentation of purpose and personnel of all sessions booked in the studio. They provide the data used in the studio manager’s database for engineer hours, assistant hours, studio staff time sheets, and musicians’ experience in the studio.

Please note: The Center for Music Business is not a place to socialize, waste time or "chit chat". It is, however, a place to learn and observe. If you feel you cannot observe these ideals while others are working and learning, please choose another place to "waste time". Otherwise, there are no "closed sessions". WELCOME!
