Course Description: An analysis of the various aspects of artist management. An overview of all the issues facing management including talent agencies, recording contracts, touring, promotion, publicity, setting up the team.

 

Course Objective: To provide students with real world understanding of artist management including all aspects of the creative and legal issues facing the manager in developing and exploiting the artist’s career.

 

Objectives of the Undergraduate School of Business:

The following school of business objectives will be applied toward class objectives:

 

To provide a personalized career-oriented and practical educational program in Business Administration which emphasizes the four themes of : Leadership, innovation, private enterprise and entrepreneurship.

To equip students with the ability to (1) communicate effectively

 (2) Think critically, and (3) make enlightened judgments about their environments.

To emphasize quality classroom instruction within the parameters of Christian principles.

 

Course Requirements:

 

Materials: textbook is This Business of Artist Management by Hetherington…Other course materials will be handouts or research assignments.

 

Attendance: Belmont University is committed to the idea that regular class attendance is essential to successful scholastic achievement. With that said, Belmont West conducts class at non traditional hours and weekends. The nature of these meetings and their frequency make it very critical that you do not miss classes. Guest lectures, tapes, discussion can not be received by looking at someone’s notes.

Participation is a major part of your grade.

Prepared Assignments: There will be several book reports and one research paper. The books will be read in those between weeks of lecture. They will be assigned according to individuals needs and career goals. A research paper will involve the selection of an active recording artist signed to a major label, The paper will include:

A) an analysis of the management style, decisions and direction that have been employed up to the date that you hypothetically take over management duties.

 

B) how you will set up your management company including financial

startup resources.

 

C) a long term career plan for your artists including an analysis of your artist and the current market.

 

D) a set up plan for their next record

 

E) touring plan

 

F) Promotion and publicity plan that includes traditional elements and internet opportunities

 

Keep an extra copy of your report until you have received a grade for any reports or projects submitted for this class. Also, check your email regularly for class updates.

 

Testing:
