Course Description: This course organizes the areas and operations of a record company. Emphasis is placed on A&R, Creative Services, Business Affairs (i.e.: Legal & Royalties), Marketing, Promotions and Publicity.
Course Objectives:
· Gain insight/define and gain practical applications in the structure, organization and operation of a typical record label
· Gain insight into the ongoing study of contemporary issues and problems relating to the recording industry.
· Gain knowledge of practical applications in the creation, development, manufacturing and promotion of a recorded product
· Understand the administrative and accounting procedures of a record company

Participation: This course will involve lecture, discussion, quizzes, assignments and class projects. Your success will be determined by your efforts, and will be reflected on your final evaluation.
Each class member will be
subjectively rated for quality of discussion.
Students should be prepared to have a reasonable understanding of the
facts and contribute actively to the topics.
Assignments: Short individual assignments will be given relating to class material and are due on the following class. Assignments are to be “Hard Copied” to instructors. Additional details will be presented in class if needed. Assignments may include the following:
1. Record Contract/Deal Memo 6. Receipt of Master Document
2. Mechanical license 7. Limited Marketing Plan design for artist
3. Web-site 8. E-marketing assignment
4. Production Timeline/Budget 9. Operations management exercises
5. Master use License Request 10. Articles provided each class
Quizzes: Each week there will be a three- (3) short-answer questions each week on the previous class lectures, assignments, handouts and/or guest speakers. There will be approximately thirteen quizzes.
Grading: All assignments and quizzes will be graded, returned and discussed briefly the following week.
Group projects: Based on the artists you choose to work with you will develop a budget and proposal for the artist. Your final proposal will be presented to area labels for consideration – details to be delivered in class.
Final exam: One hundred questions will be taken from class lectures, guest speakers, quizzes and assignments.
