Course Description: A study of Music Publishing.  The course deals with Contracts, Foreign Publishing, Catalog development, setting up a Publishing Company, Demo sessions and Licensing.

 

Course Outcomes: At the end of this course, the student will be able to:

Explain the Creative and Administrative tasks of Music Publishers…

Explain how Musical Works are Licensed and Exploited…

Compare the 3 US Performing Rights Organizations (PRO’s)…

Identify the Major Global Music Publishers…

Describe the various streams of Revenue for Music Publishers…

Describe how Musical Works are Licensed by Music Publishers…

Differentiate between Single Song and Exclusive Songwriter Contracts…

Describe how Music Publishers secure usages of their Copyrights

Solve Research problems through the application of Music Publishing Industry methods…

Demonstrate the Methods utilized by the PRO’s to collect and distribute royalties…

Testing & Assignments:

  1. Team Research Report    20% Credit

Each student will join a Research Team with 3 other students to report on current and trend issues that effect Music Publishers.   A 3-5 page typed, stapled report must be turned in to accompany the scheduled panel presentation of 12-15 minutes with a 5-10 minute question/answer session.  Trade magazines such as Billboard, Radio and Records, Music Row, The Tennessean, Hollywood Reporter, Variety as well as Internet Articles relating to topic will be used as resources and documented in bibliography.

       2.    Comprehensive Tests    2 @ 30%...combined 60% Credit

Tests will be based on reading assignments and lectures by Faculty and Guest Speakers.

       3.    Final Exam     20% Credit

Test will cover semesters Lectures (Guest and Faculty), Reading and Research Reports.
