THIS COURSE IS THE PREREQUISITE TO CEMB 3000 - INTERNSHIP

Educational Objectives of the Mike Curb College of Entertainment & Music: 1) To provide a personalized, career-oriented and practical education that emphasizes leadership, innovation, private enterprise and entrepreneurship.  2) To equip students with the tools to think critically, communicate effectively, accept responsibility, make successful decisions, and prosper in diverse work environments. 3) To emphasize quality classroom instruction within the parameters of ethical Christian principles.

 

 

Course Description: MBU 2000. Music Business Internship Lab (0). Prerequisites: MBU 1110, MBU 1380 and sophomore standing or 12 hours of credit in residence at Belmont for transfer students. A computer/lecture-centered, career-oriented course covering basic business communication skills and music industry administration. Interviewing skills, internship expectations, career-building methodology and networking techniques in the music business are also covered. 

 

 

Learning Outcomes:  

 

 

Performance Criteria:

ú         Students will learn basic job search skills and strategies and will demonstrate ability by locating available internships and/or jobs through the Career Services database (Career Connector) and networking.

ú         Students will develop necessary job search correspondence (primarily a R‚sum‚, Reference Page and Cover Letter) and will demonstrate skill by completing professional quality documents.

ú         Students will explore successful interview techniques by reading assigned text, participating in Mock Interviews and receiving a satisfactory evaluation from guest interviewers.

ú         Students will learn about resources and information that can be utilized in the job search process and will present information in class.

ú         Students will acquire job/internship professional workplace methods and exhibit these methods through class participation and attendance, as well as in future internship evaluations.

Course Requirements:

 

  1. Attendance: Attendance is required at every class unless a personal or family emergency. It's only seven weeks in length and there is a great deal of information that needs to be covered. If you're not in class, you will miss valuable aspects of the job and internship search process.

 

  1. Materials: A 2” three ring binder is required with seven dividers (R‚sum‚, Reference Page, Cover Letters, Thank You Letters, Interview Techniques, Resources, Other). Handouts will be provided to place in each section of binder.

 

  1. Assignments: R‚sum‚ (15 pts); Reference Page (7.5 pts); Cover Letter (7.5 pts); Thank You Letter (5 pts); Present Resource Information (5 pts); Attendance at Mock Interviews (15 pts); Attendance at Internship Fair (15 pts); Attendance at Poster Presentations (15 pts).

 

  1. Testing: The final exam (15 pts) will be given on the final day of class.

 

  1. Basis of grade evaluation: Grading scale as per the current Undergraduate Bulletin and is pass/fail, however I have provided a rubric of expectations.
