Selecting a Roommate

A Word About Roommates

A student does not need to have a roommate request in order to participate in the Housing Selection Process.  However, a commonly asked question during the Housing Selection Process is, “How do I sign up with the roommate of my choice?”  There is a simple two-part answer.  The first part has to do with selecting a roommate but wanting to reserve your current space.  (Please remember, you may only reserve your space.)  Reserve your current room space, ask your requested roommate to enter into the Housing Selection Draw, and at his/her designated Draw time, go to the On-line Housing Selection Process and select your room or apt. There is no guarantee that the space will be available.

The second option is for those wanting to select a new space with a specific roommate request.  Note: a student must be a current on-campus student in order to participate in the Housing Selection Process.  This means that current off-campus and new incoming students will not be able to participate in this phase of the Housing Selection Process.  Roommate requests by current residents for off-campus and incoming students must be submitted to the Office of Residence Life and will be granted only if space is available after the completion of other Housing assignment priorities.

Two current residents seeking a new assignment, need to do the following:  Neither roommate should reserve their current space.  Rather, both need to enter into the Housing Selection Draw.  This will generate Draw times for both roommates.  Between April 3rd and before the best Draw time of the two roommates, each should log on to the On-line Housing Selection Process and requests each other as roommates (information about how to do this is available below.)  Both students must request each other in order to be placed in the same room or apartment together.  Once both requests have been verified as mutual, the student with the earliest draw time may go on-line and select an available room with at least two spaces.  Once a room has been selected and submitted on-line, both students will be placed into the room and will have completed the Housing Selection Process.

Searching and Selecting a Roommate

An important function in completing the On-line Housing Selection Draw is selecting a roommate and verifying that the request is mutual.  As mentioned earlier, you do not need a roommate to sign up for a room, but should you want that option, the Search function will help you locate your request.

You may access the roommate search function from the Main Menu of the On-line Housing Selection Process by clicking on the Selecting Roommate Link.

Using the Roommate Search Feature to Find Your Roommate

The easiest way to locate your roommate request is to know the first and last name and middle initial of your roommate request.  Inputting the name and clicking on the Add Student to List button will post your requested roommate provided that he/she is in the Housing database.  You may also search using only the last or first name of your roommate request.  See Screens 1 and 2 for an example of this search.  When searching only a last name, select the correct name of the student you would like to request by clicking on his/her name and pushing the Request Student as Roommate button on the bottom of the list.  This will place the selected student into your roommate request box as seen on Screen 3.  You are only able to select one roommate.

Verifying Roommates

Once you have selected your roommate request, an email will be sent to you and your chosen roommate. The next step involves having your roommate request you by logging on and selecting you.   Your request will not be matched until this is completed.  The screenshot on the next page is an example of an unverified roommate request.  Once a roommate request has been verified, the roommate box will display a new message that your roommate request now matches. You will not be able to select a room until your roommate requests match.

Deleting Roommate Requests

To delete a roommate request, select the roommate request you would like to delete by clicking on it and pressing the Remove button shown in the example on Screen 3.  You now may re-select a new roommate or proceed to select a room by choosing the Room Selection Button.
