Belmont University

Frequently Asked

Questions

Q              What if two roommates want to reserve the same space and live in the same room/apartment, but want to live with different roommates?

A              We encourage all roommates to speak in advance about their plans for 2009-2010.   Each student has an equal right to reserve his/her current space regardless of classification or length of time in the room.  Unresolved disputes may result in both students losing priority to reserve their spaces and the room would be placed in the Housing Selection Draw.

Q              How will my drawing number be assigned?

A              Numbers will be assigned after the Same Room Reservation period.  After the completion of the Same Room Reservation period (March 31st to April 9th), all students not reserving their same rooms will be assigned a Draw number based on their anticipated classification (Senior, Junior, etc.) at the end of the Spring semester.  The lower the number, the sooner your selection time.  (Number 25 in the junior classification before the number 117.)  Accompanying each number will be a date and time to go online, log on via the Belmont Intranet Connection (BIC) and choose the Housing Selection Draw link under the Administration heading.

Q              If I’m an upperclassman, can I stay in the residence halls?

A              Yes, all current upper class students may return to in a residence hall if they wish.   However, students current living in Hail, Heron, Pembroke, Maddox, Maple, and Wright will have to select a new space for fall.  Kennedy and Thrailkill will be open to all upperclassmen.

Q              Will everyone who wants a space, get a space?

A              Every current on-campus student will have an opportunity to participate in the Housing Selection Process.  Current on-campus students under 60 hours who have not participated in the Housing Selection Process will be assigned a campus housing space upon the completion of the selection process.  Current on-campus students over 60 hours who do not participate in the Housing Selection Process may not be provided campus housing.  Additionally, any current resident who has not registered for a full-time load (12 hours) of classes, or a student who is not current by April 1st with his/her spring financial arrangements with the university will lose his/her reserved residential space for 2009-2010.

Q              How many hours do I have to have in order to live in the apartments?

A              Students who have earned 30 hours or have lived on campus for two semesters by the end of this Spring semester may move to an apartment complexes.

Q              What if I forget to reserve my same space?

A              If you forget to reserve your space, you will lose first priority to claim your current space.  Your space then goes into the Selection Draw, and you will be assigned a Selection Draw number and time.  You may claim your current space if that space is available when your Selection Draw time arrives.

Q              Once I reserve my current space, can I change my mind?

A              Yes, you may change your mind to cancel or enter into the Housing Selection Draw provided that you notified the Office of Residence Life about the change before April 3rd.   Should you notify us after April 3rd but before the start of the Room Selection Draw, you will receive the last Draw number within your classification.   Please note, that once you enter the Housing Selection Draw, you have released any rights to your current residential space.

Q              Can I change my mind or cancel once I sign up for a room?

A              Yes, you may cancel at anytime up until May 15th,  without any penalty, provided that you submit a written cancellation to the Office of Residence Life.  After May 15th, you may cancel your Housing Agreement according to the terms of the Agreement.  (Just a reminder, University policy requires all students with less than 60 hours to live on campus unless receiving an exemption from the Office of Residence Life.  You may request an exemption by meeting the exemption criteria outlined in the Housing Agreement and  submitting a written request to the Office of Residence Life.)

Q              What if I can’t go on-line for the Draw and miss my designated time?

A              We recognize that Belmont students are very busy people, and you might not be able to be online at your designated Draw time.  However, because of the ability to conduct the Housing Selection Draw on-line, you may sign up for a room space anytime after your appointed time has arrived and select from any room that may be available at the time you select your space.

Q              How many roommates may I sign up with?  If four of us want to live together, can we sign up together?

A              You may only sign up with one roommate using your selection number provided you both have verified your requests online.  The remaining two students may sign up together using one of their selection numbers and claim the remaining spaces in a four bedroom apartment provided that the spaces are available during their designated selection draw times.

Q              Can I live in the same space for summer and fall/spring?

A              Possibly.   Most students will not be able to stay in the same space for summer and fall/spring.  All our facilities are either being used for summer housing commitments or will be closed during the summer to complete necessary maintenance and cleaning in preparation for the fall semester.  We do try, when possible, to house summer students in their fall assignments, provided that space is available.   Students interested in summer housing should complete a summer application (available mid to late March) and submit it to the Office of Residence Life.

Q              What are the new housing and meal plan rates?

A              Currently, housing and meal plan rates are projected to rise somewhat.  At the time of this publication, university rates and fees were not released.  Rates should be available by the start of the Housing Selection Draw.  However, the University reserves the right to adjust rates after the completion of Housing Room Selection.

Q              What if I want to live with specific roommates, but those particular spaces are already assigned when my turn in the Housing Draw arrives?

A              Students’ choices are limited to residential spaces open at their designated Draw times.  However, Residence Life will maintain waiting lists for specific complexes or residential spaces in the event they become available through cancellations or withdrawals.  To be placed on a waiting list, you may submit a request through the housing administration page located on BIC and click on the waiting list link or you may e-mail us at housingquestions@mail.belmont.edu.  Be sure to provide us with your requested roommate, if applicable, as well as a  phone number or e-mail address.  If requesting a roommate both of you should each submit a request.  Coercive or harassing behavior regarding room selection may result in loss of campus housing and additional disciplinary action.
