GIOTTO DI BONDONE

(1267-1337)

Painter, Architect, Mosaicist
*****
Florence, Rome, Padua, Assisi

(from Vasari's "Life of Giotto")

Giotto di Bondone is often considered the first artist of the Italian Renaissance. His movement away from the static and hieratic art of the later Byzantine period in Italy created a revolution in the depiction of human beings and the world in which they live. This website is a celebration of the genius of Giotto, especially through his work in the Scrovegni or Arena Chapel in Padua. It is meant to serve as an enhancement of my Honors 221 course for Belmont University. Images used throughout have been borrowed from sites listed on the "Links" page.
