Byzantine Italy III: Torcello
The present basilica of Torcello, on the outskirts of Venice, was built in 1008 -- after the destruction of an older one -- by Bishop Orso Orseolo. The major mosaic works dates to the 12th and early 13th centuries. Some earlier remains still decorate the church. The style is Byzantine- Venetian.
