Alpha

2006 Business
Meeting
Region III Convention
Hilton Wilmington Riverside
Wilmington,
NC
Saturday, March 25, 2006
1. Dr.
Lin Garner (Lipscomb
University),
President of Region III of Alpha Chi, called the business meeting to
order at 11:00
a.m. and passed out an agenda. She
introduced the other attending officers of Region III: Dr. Judy
Cheatham (Greensboro College),
Vice President, and Dr. Jonathan Thorndike (Belmont University),
Secretary-Treasurer. Dr. Garner thanked
the Alpha Chi sponsors and students for attending the convention.
2. Dr.
Cheatham reported that according to her
unofficial count,
Region III had 90 delegates in attendance, with 26 Alpha Chi chapters
represented in Wilmington.
3. The
first item of business was the report
on Region III
finances from Dr. Thorndike. Dr.
Thorndike distributed copies of the 2005 financial report and reviewed
it. The Region III account had net growth
of
about $5,000 even though disbursements were higher than income. All of the mutual funds experienced growth
except one. The chapter subsidy amounts
were raised from $250 to $300 this year for the sponsor and first
student with
a maximum benefit of $1,000 per chapter.
The investment advisor Jim Candella reviewed the Region III
account and
thought it was too aggressive.
4. Dr.
Cheatham read off the names of the
Alpha Chi Region
III Chapters winning the “Star Chapter” Awards.
A student from each chapter came forward to receive the
certificate from
each school: Lipscomb University, Gardner-Webb
University, Catawba
College, Carson-Newman
College, Belmont
University, Mars
Hill College,
Milligan College,
Strayer University,
William Carey
College (absent), and Roanoke College (absent).
5. Dr.
Garner mentioned that Gardner-Webb
University
is a candidate for the President’s Cup for Outstanding Chapter of Alpha
Chi.
6. Dr. Garner
brought up the matter of Region III Bylaws.
It was decided that revision of the Bylaws was unnecessary
because the
Alpha Chi National Council has instructed its Long Range Planning
Committee to
study the feasibility of holding a national convention every year,
beginning in
2010. Such a move would effectively
replace many functions of the seven regions governed by Bylaws.
7. Dr.
Garner reported on the Executive
Committee meeting
that decided on the winner of the 2006 Region III Scholarship of $1,000
to
Laura Mills of Carson-Newman College for her essay “’She for God in
Him’:
Milton’s Eve and Her Role.”
8. Dr.
Garner opened the floor for nominations
for the
Region III Student Representative for 2006-2008. The
candidates were Laura Mills (Carson-Newman
College),
Lindsey Winger (Belmont University), and Leanne Lietzke (Tusculum College). After
hearing short speeches, the convention
elected Lindsey Winger.
9. Dr.
Garner reported on the work of the
Nominating
Committee consisting of Dr. Linda Gravitt (Methodist
College, Dr. Patricia Nwosu (Shaw University),
and Dr. Lori Mills (Milligan
College). New Officers of Region III for 2006-2008 were
elected by unanimous acclamation: Dr. Judy Cheatham, President, and Dr.
Gregory
A. Clemons (Mars
Hill College),
Vice President. Dr. Clemons announced
that the 2008 Region III Convention will be held in Asheville, North Carolina.
10. The
Resolutions Committee consisting of Dr.
Michelle
Putnam (Lipscomb University)
and Dr. H. Allen Walker (Freed-Hardeman
University) read
their

11. Dr. Ellen
Millsaps (Carson-Newman College and Vice President of the National
Council)
reported on the next Alpha Chi National Convention in San Antonio, Texas,
March 15-17, 2007. Dr. Millsaps
mentioned several unique features of the next National Convention and
various San Antonio
attractions. Depending on the action of
the National Council, possibly the final Region III Convention will be
held in
2008.
12. Dr.
Garner moved that Alpha Chi Region III
earmark
$2,000 towards a new “Ellen Millsaps Prize in American Literature” to
honor
Ellen’s long contribution towards Alpha Chi for many years. The motion passed unanimously.
13. Dr.
Clemons moved that for the 2007
National
Convention, the Region III subsidy amounts be increased to $500 for the
sponsor
and $500 for the official student delegate and $50 for each student
presenter for
a
maximum chapter award of $1,500. After
some discussion, the amount for each student presenter was raised to
$100 to
account for the increased travel distance.
The maximum chapter benefit will be $2,500 for one year only in
2007. Therefore,
the following Region III subsidies will be in effect for the 2007
National Convention: Faculty sponsor: $500; official student
representive: $500;
each additional student making a presentation: $100; maximum chapter
benefit: $2500. For the final Region III
convention in 2008, the subsidy amounts will return to the levels of
2006. The motion passed.
14. Dr.
Garner installed the new officers of
Alpha Chi
Region III: Dr. Judy Cheatham, President; Dr. Gregory A. Clemons, Vice
President; Lindsey Winger, Student Representative.
15. Dr.
Cheatham distributed door prizes.
With no
further business, Dr. Garner adjourned the meeting at 12:00 noon.
Respectfully
submitted,
Dr.
Jonathan L. Thorndike
