Alpha Chi National Honor
Scholarship Society
2005
Region III
Business Meeting
National
Convention
Adam’s
Mark Hotel
St. Louis,
MO
Saturday,
April 9, 2005
1. Dr.
Lin Garner (Lipscomb), president of
Region III of
Alpha Chi, called the business meeting to order at 12:00 a.m. and passed out an agenda. She introduced the other attending officer of
Region III, Dr. Jonathan Thorndike (Belmont University),
Secretary-Treasurer. Dr. Garner also
mentioned that the Vice
President of Region III, Dr. Judy Cheatham (Greensboro College)
could not attend due to a family emergency.
Dr. Garner thanked the Alpha Chi sponsors present for attending
the
convention.
2. Dr.
Garner reported that according to her
unofficial
count, Region III had 133 delegates in attendance, with 25 chapters
represented.
3. The
first item of business was the report
on Region III
finances from Dr. Thorndike, secretary-treasurer. Dr.
Thorndike distributed copies of the 2004
financial report and reviewed it. He
noted that all stock funds and the checking account were consolidated
in one
brokerage account at Morgan Stanley and that could be tracked on a
daily basis
on the internet by Executive Council members.
The account has increased in value during 2004 and the Region
III
finances are in good order. The
investment advisor Jim Candella reviewed the Region III account and
thought it
was too aggressive. A motion was made to
move one aggressive stock fund into a more conservative fixed income
fund. After discussion, the motion was
tabled and
referred to the Finance Committee for further consideration.
4. Dr.
Garner reminded the sponsors of the
criteria for
the Robert Blake Award, approved at the 2004 Region III meeting:
- Each
Region III Alpha Chi chapter can determine how to recognize the Blake
Winner
- Blake
Award is presented to the outstanding member of each chapter at the end
of the
year Honors dinner or award ceremony
- The
Blake Award would be the highest honor given by each chapter
- Senior
Alpha Chi members could be sent a list of all members from which to
nominate
the outstanding member.
- A
faculty committee at each school could confirm the nominee.
- Members of each chapter could vote on the
winner
5. Dr.
Garner moved that Region III endow a
Creative
Writing prize of $2000 in honor of Dr. Thelma Hall.
This would allow the prize of $200 to be
awarded at each National Convention to the outstanding Alpha Chi
creative
writer. The motion passed unanimously.
6. Dr.
Garner noted that two Region III Alpha
Chi chapters
were nominated for the President’s Cup Award: Catawba College
(NC Omicron) and Clearwater
Christian College
(Florida Theta).
7. Dr.
Garner talked about the June 18
Executive Committee
meeting to discuss Region III Bylaws.
The Bylaws are still under development and will be presented
next
year. Region III needs Bylaws because
not all our procedures are well understood or clearly described
anywhere and
exist as unwritten traditions. This
sometimes works to limit participation.
The EC also discussed Region III inactive chapters and tried to
contact
all of them.
8. Dr.
Garner announced that the next Region
III
convention will be held in Savannah,
Georgia. She had wanted to announce the date but was
not able to do so due the absence of Dr. Cheatham.
9. Dr.
Garner announced the winner of the
Alpha Chi Region
III Scholarship of $1000. The
scholarship went to Bethany Joy Bear of Carson-Newman College,
who presented her essay “Carnivorous Gods and Praying Mantises:
Consuming
Commodification in The Blind Assassin and Gentleman Death” at the convention. Dr. Thorndike
will send a check to Carson-Newman
College made out
in the name of Bethany
Joy Bear.
10. Dr.
Garner presented the Star Chapters
Awards for
2004-2005 to the following schools: Belmont,
Carson-Newman, Catawba, Clearwater Christian, Chowan, Freed Hardeman,
Gardner-Webb, Lipscomb, Milligan, Shorter, Strayer, and William Carey College.
With no
further business, Dr. Garner adjourned the meeting at 12:51 p.m.
Respectfully
submitted,
Dr.
Jonathan L. Thorndike
