Alpha Chi National Honor Society
Region III Business Meeting
Washington, D.C.
March 14, 2003

Dr. Bonnie Revelle (Chowan College), president of Region III of Alpha Chi, called the business meeting to order at 12:00 p.m.   She introduced the officers, Dr. Lin Garner (Lipscomb College), vice president, and Dr. Ellen Millsaps (Carson-Newman College), acting secretary/treasurer.  She also introduced Dr. Bob Blake (Elon College), member-at-large of the National Council, Dr. George Pittman (Mississippi College), vice president of the National Council, both of whom are rotating off of the Council, and Dr. Millsaps (Carson-Newman College), member-at-large of the National Council.  Dr. Revelle also thanked members of the region for their part in her election to the National Council as a member-at-large for 2003-2007.  Dr. Revelle then acknowledged past presidents of Region III, including Dr. Joyce Baker (Tennessee Wesleyan College), immediate past president.

Dr. Revelle reported that according to her unofficial count, Region III had 134 people present, with 25 chapters represented, and 59 presentations on the program.  She also recognized the Tennessee Delta Chapter at Carson-Newman College for having received the Star Chapter Award every year that it has been given.

The first item of business was the election of a new secretary/treasurer to complete the unfinished term of Dr. Thelma Hall who passed away last April.  The two nominees were Dr. Joyce Baker (Tennessee Wesleyan) and Dr. Jonathan Thorndike (Belmont University).  In a very close race, Dr. Thorndike was named the new secretary/treasurer of Region III and the chair of the Finance Committee.  Dr. Baker graciously agreed to serve on this committee, along with Dr. Joyce Mears (Lincoln Memorial University), Dr. Mike Johnson (Freed-Hardeman University), Dr.  Alex Bendazzi (Strayer University), and Dr. Millsaps, ex officio.

Dr. Revelle presented two items from the Executive Committee for action by the Region.  The first dealt with the Region III Scholarship rules.  The Committee moved that the following changes be made:
  1. The sentence "All entries should be worthy of national competition and must not be entered in any other competition" be listed as a separate item;
  2. A sentence be added to the effect that in order to give scholarship opportunities to the greatest number of students, a student cannot apply for both a Region III scholarship and a national scholarship in the same year, even with different submissions.
  3. A sentence be added stating that if a musical score is submitted, it must be accompanied by a CD.
These changes were all approved.

The second item dealt with standardizing the procedure for selecting the Distinguished Service Awards for sponsors which was begun in 2001.  These recipients are selected by the officers of each region, one for each twenty chapters.  The region voted to accept the following as the criteria for the selection of its Distinguished Service Recipients:

1.    Since Star Chapter Awards indicate involvement of a chapter sponsor locally, regionally, and nationally, each recipient will have earned Star Chapter Awards at least twice in the preceding five years.  More weight will be given to those sponsors whose chapters have earned Star Chapter Awards more times in the preceding five years.
2.    Evaluation of annual reports from those achieving Star Chapter status will provide additional information of chapter/sponsor activities.
3.    Each sponsor may receive a Distinguished Service Award one time.
4.    Officers on the selection committee are not eligible for the Distinguished Service Award the year they are serving because of the conflict of interest in nominating themselves.

Dr. Revelle then announced the winner of the 2003 Region III Scholarship Award of $1000.00 to Laura Shoop from the Tennessee Delta Chapter at Carson-Newman College.  Laura performed "Sonata Opus 10, No. 1 in C minor, Third Movement" by Ludwig van Beethoven.  Dr. David Edris, Region IV secretary/treasurer and professor of music at Peru State College, Peru, Nebraska, assisted the Executive Committee in judging the scholarship applications.

Dr. Lin Garner, vice president of Region III, announced that the 2004 Region III Convention would be held in Nashville, Tennessee, at the Embassy Suites Hotel with quad rooms for $99.00 each.  She also announced that nationally known portrait painter Michael Shane Neal would be the banquet speaker, and that the mixer would be held at the Adventure Tower at the Adventure Science Center.
                 .
Dr. Ellen Millsaps, acting secretary/treasurer, moved that the minutes of the 2002 convention business meeting be approved as printed in the fall edition of the 2002 Recorder.  She reported that the Region sent a $500 donation to the Creative Writing Scholarship Fund at Shorter College in memory of Dr. Thelma Hall, former Region III secretary/treasurer.  Dr. Millsaps gave profuse thanks to Mrs. Nita Cochran in the Alpha Chi National Office for her help in preparing the year-end report for Region III (see attached report).  Dr. Millsaps also reported the sale of Gateway Trust in the amount of $7, 783.45 in order to cover convention reimbursements of $250 for one official sponsor, $250 for one official student delegate, and $50 for each additional student appearing on the program.  Dr. Millsaps distributed convention reimbursement forms and announced that any sponsor who had ten or more years of service and who had not been recognized at Friday morning's business meeting should notify her.

The only new business was a brief discussion of a proposal to redraw regional division lines, which would mean that Region III would lose chapters in Tennessee and Mississippi.  A straw vote was overwhelmingly against such a move.  With no further business, Dr. Revelle adjourned the meeting at 12:45 p.m.

                        Respectfully submitted,
                        Dr. Ellen Millsaps
                        Acting Secretary/Treasurer
                        Region III Alpha Chi
