Frequently Asked Questions

1.  What are the membership requirements of Alpha Chi?
Alpha Chi membership is the highest academic honor awarded by Belmont University.  Its requirements are to be in the top
10% academically of all students, and to be of junior or senior class rank.  Alpha Chi members are nominated by the faculty
and must have “outstanding moral character” and display leadership, integrity, and service.

2.  To whom do I pay the Alpha Chi dues?
You can write a check for $60 to "Belmont University Alpha Chi" and take it to Toma Kimbro, Honors Secretary, 313 Fidelity Hall.  Toma's telephone is 460-6472.  You can also give it to Dr. Thorndike, 311 Fidelity, 460-5424.

3.  How do I decide on my faculty sponsor?
You should select the professor, advisor, or mentor who has been the most influential person in your intellectual, spiritual, and personal development at Belmont.  Faculty are honored and delighted to be named as your sponsor.

4.  What is our Greek letter and chapter number?
Our Greek letter is "Eta" and our chapter number is 121.  We are the Eta of Tennessee chapter of Alpha Chi.

5.  Will the faculty sponsor be invited to attend the Induction Ceremony?
Our office will send out invitations to faculty sponsors.  Family, friends, and other Belmont students and faculty are welcome to attend the Induction Ceremony.

6.  What are the responsibilities once I become a member of Alpha Chi?
There are no responsibilities.  You have been chosen on the basis of your outstanding academic performance at Belmont University.  However, you have the opportunity to serve as an officer for the coming academic year.

7.  What opportunities and advantages does Alpha Chi membership offer?
a)  You are recognized as a distinguished scholar by the University's highest honorary society.
b)  You are "pinned" by your faculty sponsor and receive the award pin.
c)  You receive a frame able membership certificate.
d)  You wear the green and blue honors cords at graduation.
e)  You enjoy opportunities to compete for Alpha Chi scholarships and fellowships, including H.Y.
     Benedict Fellowships ($2500 stipend for graduate or professional study) and Alfred H. Nolle Scholarships ($1500
     stipend for the senior year of undergraduate study).  Recent Belmont winners include Erin Cline and Andrienne Young.
f)  You have opportunities to present scholarly work at regional or national conventions in exciting locations such as Washington, D.C., Norfok, VA, and Savannah, GA.
g)  You are asked to help with high-profile academic programs and events including the Chaney Distinguished Professor balloting, Scholarship and Awards Day, Baccalaureate Service, and Induction Ceremonies.
