San Vitale was built in honor of the martyr Saint Vitalis. Begun under the Ostrogothic King, it was completed and decorated under Emperor Justinian (546-8). Considered the greatest western building of the 6th-century West, its design echoes - with variations - the Constantinople church of Ss. Sergius & Bacchus. Mosaics celebrate the Lordship of Christ and imperial power.
