The mosaic cycle on the triumphal arch and nave walls at Santa maria Maggiore is the earliest comprehensive cycle of biblical scenes that is known. Originally 21 scenes covered each wall, but only 15 and 12 remain. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob appear on the left-hand scenes, while Moses and Joshua are the main figures on the right. On the triumphal arch are scenes from the infancy narrative of Jesus, which rely on both canonical and apochryphal accounts.
