The Gulf-South Summit will present four awards at the 6th Annual Gulf-South Summit to recognize the hard work and dedication of outstanding people and programs in the field of service-learning and community engagement.
Gulf-South Summit Award for Outstanding Contributions to Service-Learning
in Higher Education
in Higher Education
The Gulf-South Summit Award for Outstanding Contributions to Service-Learning in Higher Education will be given to an individual (faculty member, staff member, or administrator) who has demonstrated excellence in creating, providing, and sustaining opportunities for engaging college/university students in service-learning.
- Evaluation Criteria:
- Innovative, creative product or activity
- Evidence of benefits to students
- Sustained effort: Product or activity has continued or developed over time
Gulf-South Summit Award for Outstanding Community Partner Contributions
to Service-Learning
to Service-Learning
The Gulf-South Summit Award for Outstanding Community Partner Contributions to Service-Learning will be given to a community organization whose members have demonstrated excellence in creating, providing, and sustaining opportunities for engaging college/university students in service-learning. Community partners should have collaborated with a service-learning program for more than one year in order to be nominated.
- Evaluation Criteria:
- Active voice: Community partner has made substantial contributions to planning and implementation of service-learning
- Evidence of benefits to students
- Sustained effort: A true collaboration has developed over time
Gulf-South Summit Award for Outstanding Contributions to Service-Learning Research
The Gulf-South Summit Award for Outstanding Contributions to Service-Learning Research will be given to an individual who has demonstrated excellence in research that contributes to the pedagogy and effective practice of service-learning in higher education. Citations for publications or conference presentations of the work should be provided as an indication of dissemination of the work.
- Evaluation Criteria:
- Research shows firm conceptual basis, investigates interesting questions
- Research methodology (measurement, statistical treatment of data) is adequate
- Research has clear implications for the practice of service-learning
- Research has been reported in such a way that it is available to service-learning practitioners (appropriate conferences, journals, or book chapters)
- The Outstanding Contributions to Service-Learning Research Award recipient will receive $500 and a plaque in recognition of his/her accomplishments.
Gulf-South Summit Award for Outstanding Student Contributions to Service-Learning
The Gulf-South Summit Award for Outstanding Student Contributions to Service-Learning will be given to a full or part-time undergraduate
student who has demonstrated extraordinary public or community service efforts while attending an institution of higher education.
- Evaluation Criteria:
- Evidence of the impacts of service-learning participation in the community
- Evidence of the impacts on his/her academic learning, civic commitment, community awareness, and personal development
- Evidence of service-learning impacts at the higher education institution
- Linked service efforts with academic study
- Demonstration of innovative and sustained approaches to address an issue in the community.
