The Tennessee Pollution Prevention Roundtable Committee on Higher Education is planning a conference to explore and advance environmental stewardship within the state’s institutions of higher education.  The Conference intends to extend the dialogue begun at last year’s Fisk University Conference where over 120 attendees representing 23 higher education institutions in Tennessee came together to share experiences and discuss the opportunity to build a sustainable environmental ethic on campuses.  This conference intends to build on last year’s results.

Where and When: March 28 and 29, 2007, at Belmont University, Nashville, TN

Why:

  • Higher education has an obligation to be a good environmental steward
  • Students will emulate the environmental example being set by higher education
  • An environmentally conscious campus will attract the best and brightest students
  • We have much to learn from one another

Content: As last year, the Conference will consist of both plenary presentations with national speakers and concurrent topic tracks with presentations by individuals from Tennessee higher education institutions.  The three tracks this year, designed to reach all consituencies on campuses, are (1) campus operations; (2) academic/instructional programs; and (3) energy/climate change.  Speakers will include faculty, staff, and students.  Topics within the tracks will include materials recycling, energy conservation, climate change initiatives, constructing “green” buildings, structuring degree programs, and much more.

Who Should Attend: Faculty and students, campus operations staff, facility planners, campus health and safety professionals, administrators wanting to learn more about university-based environmental initiatives, government leaders, and concerned citizens.

Don’t Miss: A Presidents’ Signing Ceremony, the evening of March 28, led by Belmont President Robert Fisher where leaders of higher education institutions in Tennessee will sign the Talloires Declaration committing their campuses to sustainability in the future.
