Ceratopogonidae Information Exchange (CIE) History

*Ceratopogonids are known by many common names, including biting midges.  Here are a few of the many names and ecological roles for which biting midges are known.

Ceratopogonidae Information Exchange (CIE) Newsletter

The CIE, is issued twice a year (there are no subscription costs), and was begun to facilitate communication.  The format is extremely flexible.  Contributions may be of any length and deal with any subject having some bearing on the study of ceratopogonids.  For example, contributors may report their current interests or plans, observations or techniques of probable value to the readership, requests for addresses, study material or reprints, or any other matter of concern.

The CIE was begun in 1968 by Dr. John P.T. Boorman (Animal Virus Research Laboratory, Pirbright, Surrey, UK) as a newsletter to facilitate communication between workers interested in Ceratopogonidae. See a brief summary about the beginnings of the CIE, in the words of John Boorman  himself.  About 1985, Boorman passed the CIE editorship torch to Dr. John R. Linley (Florida Medical Entomology Research Laboratory, Vero Beach, Florida, USA).  John Boorman actively continues his work on the Ceratopogonidae in retirement, also his work with other taxa.  John Linley continued as editor until his untimely death in November 1994.  Dr. Daniel V. Hagan served as editor from November 1994 - May 2000.  Dr. Steve Murphree began as editor in June 2000.

The CIE Newsletter serves as a bulletin for planning and communicating information on meetings, symposia, workshops and so forth.  Finally, there is in every issue a compilation of recent literature in the field.  Any person(s) wishing to contribute to the newsletter or to receive future issues should contact:
