    Willis W. Wirth was a prolific scientist and was author or coauthor of more than 400 publications consisting of abstracts, research papers, chapters and monographs in the fields of public health and taxonomy of several groups of Diptera, including Aulacigastridae, Canacidae, Ceratopogonidae,Chironomidae, Culicidae, Curtonotidae, Deuterophlebiidae, Dolichopodidae, Drosophilidae, Ephydridae, Lonchopteridae, Phoridae, Psychodidae, Stratiomyidae, and Syrphidae. Most entomologists acknowledge that he was the foremost authority on the family Ceratopogonidae.

    Dr. Wirth was always anxious to establish an interest in other biologists for his favorite family of Diptera: Ceratopogonidae. He coauthored publications with more than 115 other scientists, and thus spread the study of Ceratopogonidae to all the continents of the globe. His enthusiasm regarding the study of the tiny biting midges was contagious, and many of the workers today who are involved in entomological research began their study of ceratopogonids with his help.

    Clearly one of Dr. Wirth's greatest strengths was his organizational skills. As he saw the approach of the end of his career, he carefully planned out the details of numerous collaborative projects before his death, and completed the distribution of biological material and reprints to his surviving collaborators.

    His love of the study of biting dipterans survives in the numerous scientists who share his fascination with the biology of these insects. His enjoyment of the study of these micro dipterans was evident by the twinkle in his eyes as he intricately described the morphological differences between species, which are most often described by the layman as nuisance pests.
