on November 23rd 1994

* Terry Linley (John's widow) asked to make some additions to Dr. Kettle's obituary for John. Terry's additions are set off in italics from Dr. Kettle's remarks.

I was deeply moved to learn of the death of John Linley on November 19th. He had always appeared to be supremely fit so that I had thought that one day he might write my obituary, but I never expected to be composing one for him. I first met John in the middle of 1959, when he had completed a B.Sc. degree at the University College of the West Indies, in special relationship with the University of London, and he joined me as a research assistant on the newly created Sandfly Research Unit in Montego Bay, Jamaica. A photograph of young John and the other members of the team can be found in the Bulletin of Entomological Research (1968), 58. plate XXX, following  p. 753.

Shortly after joining the unit he celebrated his 21st birthday and quickly became one of the family, being much admired by my young children. He carried the aura of being the 200 m butterfly swimming champion of the Caribbean and he was the only person I have ever known to emerge sweating after a training session in sea or pool! John, my wife and I sang in a choir which performed on formal occasions on request and competed with some success in the local choral competitions. Another cameo of John is of him flapping the front of his shirt to cool off.

Towards the end of my two year secondment to the Govt. of Jamaica a new sandfly problem emerged in the tourist area, caused by Leptoconops bequaerti, which had been little studied in the past. John immediately began a detailed study of that species and I left him happily engaged on that project when I returned to Edinburgh, Scotland at the end of 1960. A couple of years later he went to the Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio where he met and married Sue. They returned shortly afterwards to Jamaica and John rejoined the Sandfly Research Unit.

Following the Zoological Congress in Washington in 1963 I flew down to Jamaica to see how the work was progressing and stayed with John and Sue who were ecstatically happy at the birth of their daughter in May of that year. John and Sue had their second daughter Lori in 1964.

In 1965 I caught up with John again when he was working at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and I was on study leave from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. John was not suited to the life of a commuter travelling 25 miles from Guildford to Central London in the morning and back again in the evening. As a medical establishment there was a formality in dress at the L.S.H.T.M. which John found difficult to accept. Eccentricity was acceptable in professorial staff but was definitely frowned upon in the lower ranks.

John had the disappointment of having his Ph.D. thesis returned for revision and resubmission. I thought that the request that he resubmit was not entirely reasonable, especially when I learned the name of the dissenting examiner. He/She was voicing a complaint which had been levelled against the examiner so perhaps he/she was ultrasensitive on the issue. Nevertheless John disciplined himself to revise and resubmit the thesis, which was accepted without comment. After arriving in Vero Beach in 1967 to take a job at the then Entomological Research Center, their third daughter Diane was born. From 1969 to 1985 John was married to Patricia Linley.

John showed his quality as a scientist by later submitting a thesis for the highest degree awarded by the University of London, a Doctor of Science (D.Sc.). That degree is awarded on published work which develops a theme within a discipline and which has been published long enough for informed criticism to have been made. When joint papers are included in such a thesis co-authors are required to present signed statements on the contributions made by the individual authors. John well deserved the award of the D.Sc. (Lond.). When the Florida Medical Entomology Laboratory became associated with the University of Florida and John's status was confirmed by him being made a full professor of the University.

We next met at the International Congress of Entomology in Canberra, Australia in 1972 when John accompanied my wife and me back to Brisbane where I was able to show him some of the State's beauty and also the breeding sites of coastal Culicoides and Leptoconops on Bribie Island. It was not until 1980 that we met in person again in London in 1980 at the Fourth International Symposium on Ceratopogonidae, a three day meeting held in the British Museum (Natural History), London and the Animal Virus Research Institute at Pirbright (See Israel Journal of Entomology (1981) 15, 109-128.

In 1984 I was able to spend some days at Vero Beach on my way to the International Congress of Tropical Medicine and Malaria in Calgary and share with John his enthusiasm for his current activities and the application of new techniques as well as appreciating his past achievements. We were able to visit breeding sites of blood-sucking ceratopogonids on the Indian River, one of which is appropriately named Leptoconops linleyi. John appreciated having Bill Wirth, the doyen of ceratopogonid taxonomists, near at hand in Gainesville when Bill moved south after retirement. In the last three months a fruitful era in the study of ceratopogonids has come to an end with the deaths of Bill Wirth and John Linley.

In 1986 John married Terry Reed; his fourth daughter Erin was born in February 1987 and his only son Brian Roger was born in July 1989.

John's last effort was to convene the Ceratopogonid Symposium during the Dipterology Congress in Guelph in August this year. It required much patience and tact to make it possible for Dr. Valentina Glukhova to attend the Congress from the Zoological Institute in St. Petersburg and participate in the symposium. It was entirely due to John's persistence that she was able to attend.

In a letter earlier this year John referred to his intention to take his family to visit Lisa and to see his first grandson and then go to England in September to bring his father over to the States to be close to him and his brother, Martin, who was due to move to Vero Beach from Jamaica in July. It is an irony of life that having brought the family physically close together so that his father might have the benefit of his sons to care for him in his later years that John should die first. I find it difficult to believe that John is dead. To me it is the death of an admired and much loved younger member of the family.

* Terry Linley (John's widow) asked to make some additions to Dr. Kettle's obituary for John. Terry's additions are set off in italics from the Dr. Kettle's remarks. Terry was very grateful that Dr. Kettle shared his memories of John with the group, and she wanted to expand a little bit on some details of John's life.
