THE CERATOPOGONIDAE INFORMATION EXCHANGE

The CIE, issued twice a year (no subscription costs but donations to help with photocopying/mailing costs are welcomed), was
begun in 1968 as a newsletter to facilitate communication between workers interested in Ceratopogonidae.  The format is extremely
flexible.  Contributions may be of any length and deal with any subject having some bearing on the study of ceratopogonids.  For
example, contributors may report their current interests or plans, observations or techniques of probable value to the readership,
requests for addresses, study material or reprints, or any other matter of concern.  The newsletter serves also as a bulletin for planning
and communicating information on meetings, symposia, workshops and so forth.  Finally, there is in every issue a compilation of recent
literature in the field.

Any person(s) wishing to contribute to the newsletter or to receive future issues via e-mail should contact:

CIE Vol. 79 – May 2007 -The Ceratopogonidae Information Exchange Newsletter

Dear Colleagues,

Greetings!  I hope this finds you in good health and still engaged in studies of the Ceratopogonidae.  As is often the case, I
have received queries from individuals who visited the CIE website.  One person sent an excellent description of his party’s
experience with biting midges at the Rio Negro in Brazil.  I was reminded of Alfred Russell Wallace who, after spending some
time on the Rio Negro, wrote:

"I was exposed to the pest of the sand-flies, which, every afternoon, from four to six, swarm in millions, causing by their bites on the face,
ears, and hands, the most painful irritation".

My thanks again to colleagues who graciously assisted me in responding via e-mail to individuals with questions about biting
midges.

Much research has occurred during the past 6 months as can be seen in the 78 publications, mostly in refereed journals, that
appear in the Recent Literature section.  Please continue to send me print or electronic copies of your publications.

Periodically, I state my need for your financial assistance. My out-of-pocket costs for postage in mailing issues to subscribers
without e-mail access is typically $20-25 U.S.D. Please consider sending funds to offset these fees as well as the $816.00 costs
that I paid to print and mail issues prior to converting to e-mail distribution.

Volume 80 of this newsletter will appear before mid-December, 2007.  Please send research summaries, requests for information,
etc. to me by Friday, December 7th.

With kind regards,

Steve Murphree

Culicoides Surveillance in Switzerland                                                                  Feb. 7th 2007

Since 2003, Switzerland has been gathering information on Culicoides populations in certain areas of the country. This entomological
surveillance was mainly created due to the emerging threat of Bluetongue disease in neighboring countries, and forms part of a Ph.D.
program entitled ‘The establishment of an early warning system for vector-borne diseases’. Along with this entomological part,
serological sampling is also conducted in strategically placed sentinel herds throughout Switzerland (Racloz et al., 2006).

The entomological part of the study involves setting up Onderstepoort black light traps (Venter et al.,1997) at selected sites in areas
considered at ‘higher risk’ of vector presence, focusing on the canton of Ticino and collecting samples during the months of June to
September. Due to its neighboring location to Italy and its specific micro-climate, Ticino was considered as a higher-risk zone for both
the occurrence of BTV and its vectors, as well as being the location where a single specimen of C. imicola was found in 2003
(Cagienard et al., 2006).  From 2004-2006, 7 trapping sites were studied at a weekly frequency in the canton of Ticino, and due to
the present BT situation in northern Europe, two additional sentinel herds and entomological traps were set-up in the canton of Basel,
situated near the borders of Germany and France.

Samples are firstly microscopically analyzed according to the protocol established by the Institute of Animal Health (IAH) to determine
the frequency of various Culicoides spp and groups, mainly C. imicola, C. obsoletus and C. pulicaris. Secondly, a proportion of the
samples are directly analysed by PCR to confirm the absence of C. imicola (Cetre-Sossah et al., 2004) in the Institute of Parasitology
in Zurich.

Along with Culicoides composition and abundance, climatic and geographical data are collected. At the actual trap sites, maximum and
minimum temperature along with altitude are recorded, whilst figures for wind speed and relative humidity have been collected from local
weather stations. Results of the past two years have shown similar abundance and composition levels, although a full analysis is yet to be
completed for 2006.

Culicoides data from 2005

Limitations to the identification of certain Culicoides are faced when trying to separate the females in the obsoletus and pulicaris groups,
and for the present time have been classed as senso largo. The figures show certain samples of dewulfi and others, yet these were males
identified in the samples.

The last figure demonstrates where the sentinel herds are located in Switzerland (blue stars) and where further are planned to be added
(green stars), and is based on a map which highlights areas suitable for Culicoides presence according to temperature, rainfall and altitude.
It is planned for the project to continue the sentinel herd surveillance in 2007.

Colleagues,

I joined the faculty in the Department of Entomology at Louisiana State University in November of 2005.  I am working on insects of
medical importance, primarily mosquitoes.  I will be helping on a couple of Culicoides projects and I look forward to spending some
time working on the punkies.

Regards,

Wayne
