THE CERATOPOGONIDAE INFORMATION EXCHANGE

The CIE, issued twice a year (no subscription costs but donations to help with photocopying/mailing costs are welcomed), was begun in 1968 as a newsletter to facilitate communication between workers interested in Ceratopogonidae.  The format is extremely flexible.  Contributions may be of any length and deal with any subject having some
bearing on the study of ceratopogonids.  For example, contributors may report their current interests or plans, observations or techniques of probable value to the readership,
requests for addresses, study material or reprints, or any other matter of concern.  The newsletter serves also as a bulletin for planning and communicating information on
meetings, symposia, workshops and so forth.  Finally, there is in every issue a compilation of recent literature in the field.

Any person(s) wishing to contribute to the newsletter or to receive future issues via e-mail should contact :

CIE Vol. 77 – May/June 2006 -The Ceratopogonidae Information Exchange Newsletter

Dear Colleagues,

Greetings! After sending the first version of this issue in May I received 30 bounced e-mail requests which I have been since been able to update.  In addition, I had forgotten
to include information about Art Borkent’s new FlyTree research website.  Also, Art sent information about two important publications which will add to our knowledge of
Chinese ceratopogonids.  I have included information about these in an announcement below.

Much research has occurred during the past 6-7 months as can be seen in the 52 publications in refereed journals that appear in the Recent Literature section.

Volume 78 of this newsletter will appear in mid-December, 2006.  Please send research summaries, requests for information, etc. to me by Friday, December 8.

With kind regards,

Steve Murphree

        Yu Y.-X., J.-H. Liu, G.-P. Liu, Z.-J. Liu, B.-S. Hao, G. Yan & T.-S. Zhao. 2005.  Catalogue and Keys of Chinese

Ceratopogonidae ( Insecta, Diptera) [in Chinese].  Military Medical Science Press.  viii + 187 pp. ISBN:7801217047

This book has been recently published and will be of interest to many of you.  The entire text, other than a brief introduction, is in Chinese.  All species known from China are catalogued and keyed.  A limited number of figures are included.  The work is available from China Scientific Book Services at http://www.hceis.com This work is drawn from the recently published and much larger work, "The Ceratopogonidae of China" volumes I and II (see citation below). using a title search.

Yu Yixin, Editor . 2006. The Ceratopogonidae of China. volumes I and II.  [in Chinese].  Military Medical Science Press.

soft cover, 1679 pp. ISBN 7801216873

This monumental work describes all 39 genera, 1015 species of Ceratopogonidae in China, including a number of new genera and subgenera, 652 species discovered by Chinese entomologists and 331 new species.  The fact that 1015 species represents one-tenth of all described ceratopogonid species worldwide is certainly worthy of note.  This work as well as Yu et al. 2005 (cited above) are available from China Book House, JISC at the following link: http://www.jnbook.com/book/academic32.htm#t630 .  There is currently a special offer for the purchase of either work: The Ceratopogonidae of China: US$158.00 + delivery cost ($91.00 DHL, $44.00 Airmail, $29.00 SAL, $ 18.00 Surface); Yu et al. 2005: $15.00 + delivery costs (same as above).  Visit these links for information about ordering (http://www.jnbook.com/order.htm)  and payment: http://www.jnbook.com/payment.htm

3. Art Borkent’s New FlyTree Website

Subscribers are encouraged to visit Art Borkent’s new research website at:

   http://www.inhs.uiuc.edu/cee/FLYTREE/Borkent.html.

A significant resource on Art’s site is his “World Species of Biting Midges” last updated in March of this year as well as the two page table of
    extant and extinct
valid ceratopogonid species.
