The Admissions Committee -- Belmont University
What is the Admissions Committee?
The Admissions Committee is responsible for making admissions decisions on behalf of the faculty of the university. They review applications for admission and then make the appropriate admissions decisions based upon the entire picture presented of the student in his or her application. They have the authority to grant a student admission to Belmont, deny a student admission to Belmont or admit a student with stipulations. The Admissions Committee consists of the Dean of Enrollment Services and representatives from each college who are appointed by the Dean of the College.
How does a student get an Admissions Committee Hold?
When the Admissions Committee reviews an application for admission, they have the option to admit a student with stipulations in order to ensure the student’s academic success as he/she begins his or her enrollment at Belmont. Admissions Committee stipulations usually require the student to earn a “C” or better in each course and include a credit hour limitation so the student may focus on doing well in his or her course work. In some cases, certain required courses may be specified as well. The hold is placed on a student’s registration so that no changes in registration may occur without review of the admissions office and so that meeting of stipulations may be checked before further enrollment.
How does this impact academic advising for new students?
Every Belmont student must meet with an academic advisor before registering for classes. After the Advisor Hold is released, the student must then meet with Anne Edmunds, Associate Director of Admissions, in order to have the Admissions Committee Hold released. This additional step ensures the student will register for courses that are in line with the stipulations on his/her first term of enrollment.
How does this impact academic advising for current students?
While students may not participate in priority registration because their stipulations will not yet have been met, current students with Admissions Committee stipulations should meet with an academic advisor during the normal advising period for priority registration and have the advising hold removed. This ensures that a student will be able to register at the earliest possible time once the Admissions Committee Hold has been lifted.
Why can’t students with Admissions Committee Holds participate in priority registration?
The Admissions Committee cannot determine whether a student has met stipulations until after the semester has ended and grades have been submitted to the Registrar. Since the student’s future enrollment at Belmont is dependent upon successful completion of coursework, whether or not he/she meets his/her specific stipulations must be determined before he/she can enroll for a future term at Belmont. Occasionally, students are given stipulations for a subsequent term as well which can only be set after the grades for the current term are available.
When can the student register?
After final grades are processed by the Office of the Registrar, they will be reviewed over the following few days by the Admissions Committee. Students who meet their stipulations will then be allowed to register for the next term in a timeframe communicated to them earlier in the semester.
What happens if a student does not meet their stipulations?
If an incoming freshmen does not meet stipulations during their first term of enrollment, generally he/she will be required to repeat any courses in which the grade earned was below a “C”. Incoming transfer students are typically dismissed from Belmont if they do not meet their stipulations. The Admissions Committee considers appeals for students to continue enrollment at Belmont on a case by case basis and only in unusual circumstances. This is explained to students in a letter following the review of grades. Students should contact Anne Edmunds for further information.
